TIRUCHI: Construction of the Palakkarai road overbridge here has reached final stages and is likely to be thrown open for traffic by April. The bridge, coming up across the railway level crossing at Bheema Nagar, will be the last one to be completed of the four bridges sanctioned in 1998. The opening of the bridge will bring relief to motorists as the closure of the Palakkarai Main Road and Heber Road has put heavy pressure on other arterial roads, especially Thillai Nagar and Thennur main roads over the past four years. Highways officials said that nearly 90 per cent of work had been completed, except for the construction of service bridges and main structure of a T-shaped bridge across Uyyakondan river. Highways authorities were waiting for stoppage of release of water into the Uyyakondan to take up construction of service bridges across the river. Water is now being released for irrigation on a turn system. Only after the construction of the service bridges on either side, the main bridge structure would be extended across the river to ensure that residents of the region were not totally cut off. Work was also apace on laying approach roads on Heber Road and Palakkarai Main Road. "We're striving to complete the bridge by March. Even if there was any delay and spillover, the bridge will be opened for traffic by April," a senior officer of the Highways Department told The Hindu .
