HASSAN: The Janata Dal (Secular) is gaining control over various local bodies in the district in a row after the formation of the coalition Government in the State. The party gained "indirect" control over the Congress-ruled Hassan Zilla Panchayat after the defection of five Congress members and gained control over Hassan Milk Union Ltd. (HAMUL) despite the influence of the former Minister H.C. Srikantaiah and Hassan MP G. Puttaswamy Gowda. After securing 58 seats in the election to Legislative Assembly in 2004, it gained the control over Hassan District Central Cooperative Bank (HDCC), and Patel Shivaram of Janata Dal (S) its president. Then came elections to Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMC). The party got six seats and made Lakshmana its president. The party won 36 of the 40 seats in the zilla panchayat and made Appanna Shetty and Kamaski Raju president and vice-president respectively. The party is set to capture power in the Hemavathi Cooperative Sugar Factory. It won all the 17 posts of directors of the cooperative in the elections held on Friday.
