Rosaiah sees no threat

to UPA Government

KURNOOL : Finance Minister K. Rosaiah said the UPA Government at the Centre has no immediate threat either from its allies or the Opposition.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Mr. Rosaiah, who inaugurated an oldage home at Mantralayam, said the Congress was in power only in three states when Sonia Gandhi took over as the AICC president. However, under her stewardship the party formed governments in 16 states. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL : A TDP leader Laxmi Reddy was hacked to death at his native village Pesaladinne in Kurnool district on Saturday night.

According to reports, Laxmi Reddy and his son Devendar Reddy returned to their village by bus around 8 p.m.

Their rival group, which was waiting for them, overpowered Laxmi Reddy and hacked him to death. Devendar Reddy ran away from the place.

Later, the supporters of Laxmi Reddy carried out an attack on the houses of rival group and set a few of the houses on fire. - Staff Reporter

VIZIANAGARAM : Five leaders of Students Federation of India (SFI), including district committee president N.Y. Naidu, were taken into custody when they along with over 200 students tried to approach Chief Minister for submitting a memorandum demanding release of scholarships and fee reimbursement for BC students. The police on bandobust duty at Gantyada prevented them from approaching the venue at Korlam village and detained them at the police station. -Correspondent

HYDERABAD : An organisation to promote scientific temper for fighting superstitions, Centre for Inquiry - India, will be inaugurated on February 19.

The advisor to the Centre, Chandana Chakrabarthy, told a news conference on Sunday that they would run counselling centres to spread rational thinking among people steeped in superstitions.

N. Innaiah, a rationalist, said the Centre would take up scientific studies on child abuse by religions, women's rights, environmental issues and population explosion. - Special Correspondent

`Restore kerosene quota for pink cardholders'

Kakinada: Curbs on supply of kerosene quota to pink cardholders were termed unilateral and discriminatory by Telugu Desam Party city unit president Sunkara Tirumala Kumar on Sunday.

He told newsmen that the Civil Supplies Department order to withhold kerosene to pink cardholders had subjected the middle class to untold hardship. Claiming that the TDP Government had supplied 10 litres each to all cardholders, Mr. Kumar appealed to the Government to restore kerosene quota to pink cardholders. - Correspondent

Free coaching for

BSF aspirants

Srikakulum: Free coaching in physical fitness and written test will be given to those who had applied for the posts of constables in the Border Security Force.

The coaching will be conducted from February 13 to 20. Interested candidates should attend at the district police training centre in Thandyamvalasa by 9 a.m. on Monday.

File cases at reception

Srikakulum: Superintendent of Police A.S.Gurappa, urged the public to take advantage of reception centres in getting their grievance redressed. Officials manning these centres were instructed to issue receipt to all complaints received at the centres, failing which severe action would be taken against the persons, Mr.Gurappa warned. In January, as many as 794 complaints had been received and 386 solved.- Special Correspondent

Farmer dies in

road accident

Kakinada: A farmer, Yalla Pallamraju, (28), of Bendamurilanka village died on the spot and a pillion rider Polisetti Gangadhar Rao, (50), suffered injuries when the motorcycle on which they were travelling was hit by a vehicle near Kamanagaruvu road centre under Amalapuram rural police station limits on Sunday evening.
