GATS in higher education flayed

NEW DELHI: The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shikshak Mahasangh on Sunday organised a seminar in collaboration with the National Democratic Teachers' Front. Speakers at the seminar stressed the need for the Government to be very cautious about the demerits and negative effects of the implementation of General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS) in the field of higher education. They criticised the attempt of the Government to treat education as a commodity rather than a powerful mechanism for social transformation.

The speakers also castigated private financing of higher education. It was felt that Government must promote value-oriented education and upgrade the prevailing evaluation system and syllabus of various subjects in the colleges and universities.

IGNOU, NBE join hands in medical education

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University here has signed a "Memorandum of Collaboration" with the National Board of Examination to lay the foundation for cooperation and joint action to support the development of medical education and training in the country.

The main objectives of the programme are to recognise the common goals of higher medical education and meet continuous training needs of doctors to participate effectively in the processes of national development. The focus will be on sharing resources and mutual acknowledgement of the experience, expertise and capabilities of IGNOU and NBE.

The two institutions will also establish a network of centres of learning that are involved in the field of higher medical education to support their programmes.

Yoga camp organised

NEW DELHI: Ananda Marga Pracharak Samgha is organising a two-day free yoga sadhna shivir and seminar on physical, psychic and spiritual development of human beings at Gram Panchayat House, Katwaria Sarai from February 18.

Trained and experienced trainer Acharya Sambhutyananda Avadhut will deliver a lecture on eight parts of Asthang yoga. The programme will start with Prabhat Samgiita.

Training for diamond appraisal

NEW DELHI: In view of the forthcoming Valentine's Day celebrations, Ensign, a Delhi-based gems and jewellery design training centre, has launched an education programme for prospective diamond jewellery buyers to impart training in appraisal of diamonds. The firm would also provide independent appraiser for the buyers so that they get genuine items. "The services of an independent appraiser are being considered important as he is not paid by the seller for the job and he provides correct information to the buyers," said a press release.
