Residents of Gulmohar Park allege that the move would promote commercial activities

  • DDA has allotted the land after changing land use
  • Area MLA Kiran Walia expresses her solidarity with the residents

NEW DELHI: The residents of Gulmohar Park in South Delhi held a protest demonstration in the colony on Sunday to protest against the allotment of a 1,000 square metre plot by the Delhi Development Authority to a dance school alleging that the move would promote commercial activities in the residential area thereby leading to problems pertaining to entry of outsiders and parking.

About 300 residents gathered in front of the plot, No. A-43, at 11 a.m. to raise their voice on the issue. Carrying placards and banners, they denounced the move of the DDA to allot the plot, which had been kept aside for a nursery schools, to Birju Maharaj dancing Institute.

"Today, when demolitions of commercial properties are being carried out in residential areas all over the Capital, DDA is promoting commercial activity in a residential area by allotting a big plot for commercial use,'' the president of Delhi Gulmohar Park Journalist Colony Residents Welfare Association, V.C. Tandon, said.

Stating that originally the case pertains to 1997 when DDA had allotted the land after changing land use, Mr Tandon said when the matter had gone to the High Court it had asked them to approach DDA again. The Supreme Court had also asked them to follow the High Court's directive on going back to DDA.

``But since DDA has not entertained our plea, we have now written to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, who is also the Chairman of DDA to review the matter,'' The area MLA, Kiran Walia, also participated in the protest and expressed her solidarity with the residents.
