Bangalore: Every dog has its day and so it was for the over 300 dogs participating in the 82nd and 83rd All India Championship Dog Show.

The dog show was organised by the Mysore Kennel Club here on Sunday.

R.N. Sreenivas Gowda, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bidar; P.A. Shankar, Director of Post Graduate Studies, KVAFSU, Bidar; M.G. Govindaiah, Dean of Veterinary College, KVAFSU, Bangalore; Rajanna, board member of KVAFSU, Bangalore; and G.S. Bhat, Dean of Dairy Science College, KVAFSU, Bangalore; inaugurated the show and released a souvenir and catalogue.

Over 45 breeds of dogs participated.

"This year, we have received 105 outstation entries," said K. Bhagwan, member of executive committee of Mysore Kennel Club.

Clyde Rogers of New Zealand; Parthasekhar Chaterjee, member of the executive committee of the Kennel Club of India; and Mathew C. John, retired professor of Madras Veterinary College; judged the dogs.

"The dogs are judged based on various parameters, including pedigree, upkeep, gait, training and relationship with the owner. Challenge certificates are given to the winners of the first and second rounds.

"The selected dogs then compete with each other for the championship title. Of the seven dogs selected in each show, five are given the prizes.

"The other participants will get certificates," Mr. Bhagwan said.

The efforts of the Mysore Kennel Club in promoting "Mudhol Hound" have paid off. "The Kennel Club of India has set the breed standard for `Mudhol Hound', which is slowing gaining popularity as a popular Indian dog breed," said B.C. Ramakrishna, president of Mysore Kennel Club.

The Karnataka Milk Federation supplied milk to all the participating dogs. It also gave away flavoured milk to children.

Some of the breeds participating in the show include Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese, Pug, Rottweiler, St. Bernard, Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Dobermann, Great Dane, German Shepherd and Boxer.
