BANGALORE: CommonWealth nations in the world will face an acute shortage of over 15 million quality teachers in the next decade to impart higher education in various faculties, according to Sir John Daniel, CommonWealth of Learning President. Briefing presspersons here on Sunday, Sir Daniel underlined the pressing need to meet the challenge of shortage of teachers in the near future. In this regard, he has talked about the CommonWealth of Learning's partnership with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC), to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country, to work on issues and challenges related to quality assurance in higher education. The CommonWealth of Learning, he said, would work with NAAC as an institutional partner in its mission to ensure quality higher education in the country. Sir Daniel was speaking before the inauguration of a three-day national workshop on "Material Development for Quality Assurance in Higher Education," being organised by CommonWealth of Learning and NAAC, with participants from Uganda, Canada, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria and Australia. Sir Daniel said the event would deliberate on key issues, including the promotion of quality education. It was also proposed to come up with quality indicators for teachers to serve as guidelines and prepare source materials to support those involved in quality assurance in education. NAAC Director V.S. Prasad spoke.
