TDP seeks white paper on ryots' suicide

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded a white paper on suicide/hunger deaths of farmers and weavers, along with details of compensation paid to their families, since the Congress came to power.

At a press conference here on Sunday, TDP vice-president J.R. Pushparaj and BC cell president and former MP R. Ramachandraiah regretted the state of affairs with variation in figures given by different people.

They challenged the Government for a fact-finding mission, saying the party could prove that 2,998 farmers and 347 weavers had either committed suicide or died of hunger in 21 months. Mr. Pushparaj recalled Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's statement on taking charge that while over 3,000 deaths of farmers/weavers had occurred during TDP rule, the Congress would ensure there was no loss of life.

Mr. Pushparaj wanted to know the status of children "adopted" by the Congress leaders in the presence of Sonia Gandhi during her visit to Anantapur when the party was in the Opposition.
