MCH moves to put curbs on hawkers

Staff Reporter

Trade zones, restricted area to be identified soon

  • The idea is to ensure free flow of traffic
  • Police official says joint inspections will help identify open spaces
  • City vending committees to be constituted
  • Each area to be divided into three colour zones

HYDERABAD: The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad has proposed to identify and implement trade zones and restricted areas for hawkers and vendors within 15 days for ensuring free flow of traffic on the main corridors of the twin cities.

After a joint meeting with the traffic police, Commissioner Sanjay Jaju said vendors and hawkers would not be permitted to conduct their business on the carriageway of main roads and junctions.

Officials observed that at many places hawkers were occupying a major portion of the main road and in some places, shop owners themselves were allegedly allowing them to do their business in front of their shops.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A.K. Khan pointed out hawkers on main roads caused obstructions for vehicular traffic and said joint inspections by the police and town planning officials would help identify open places available in every area to earmark places for hawkers.

    Broad representation

City vending committees would be constituted as per Government guidelines to formulate vending areas in all-important locations. Panel members will consist of local elected representatives, hawkers associations, resident welfare associations; self-help groups, representatives of trade and commerce, non-governmental organisations and officials from MCH and traffic police.

    What the colours say

Mr. Jaju said each area would be divided into three colour zones -- green indicates free area where street vending is allowed without any restrictions, amber is restricted area where vending is permitted on specific days or time and red colour denotes where no street vending is permitted.

He asked officials to formulate such coloured areas in each locality in consultation with vending committee members. Such identified areas will be required to display on the street through respective colour signboards in a fortnight.
