Adding to air pollution

The dust raised by Municipal staff sweeping the streets using short brooms of wild grass is adding to air pollution. Instead of the short brooms, reed brooms with long handles can be used as is done in coastal Andhra. This not only limits the amount of dust raised but is also easier on the backs of the sweepers.

Not tenable

Apropos the news item `Many car drivers play it safe' in The Hindu I consider Additional Commissioner A.K. Khan's argument untenable. If one reads the Crime Watch column, one will notice that in the twin nobody dies in car crashes for not using seat belts. On the other hand, signal jumping by RTC buses, sand-loaded lorries, obsolete heavy vehicles, unlicensed and speeding buses and violation of traffic rules are responsible for most accidents.

It would therefore make more sense for the traffic police to concentrate on controlling traffic than on collecting funds for treasury by means of challans.

No sign of friendship

Syed Vicaruddin, president of the Indo-Arab League, Hyderabad, while welcoming a visiting Arab dignitary referred to the traditional friendly ties between India and Arab countries.

Time and again the Organisation of Islamic Countries dominated by Arab countries has denounced India's violation of human rights of Kashmiri Muslims and supported Pakistan in its demand that India's armed forces must be withdrawn from India's own territory, Kashmir. If the Indo-Arab friendship is true, Mr. Vicaruddin and the Indo-Arab League must represent to the Arab countries that they should not support Pakistan.

Post office closed

New Bhoiguda in Secunderabad is a very busy locality. Till recently the areas was served by a post office, the only one in a radius of about a couple of km. However, in the first week of February, the post office was closed and merged with Musheerabad post office more than a couple of km away.

Several post boxes have been removed and now we are told that they will reduce the number of post offices. Citizens are forced to patronise courier organisations, another way of privatisation of the postal system.
