Three charred to death as their car collides with truck

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: In a tragic incident, a newly engaged couple and their woman friend were charred to death in their Fiat Palio after it had a head-on collision with a truck which was coming on a wrong carriageway at Malviya Nagar in South Delhi in the early hours of Sunday. The truck driver, who had fled from the scene, was arrested later.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 3-30 a.m. when Sumit Tewari, who worked in a financing firm, his fiancée Mamta Tyagi and their friend Jahanvi Roy were returning in the Palio car from a family get-together in a South-West Delhi restaurant. Sumit was on his way to drop Mamta at her Malviya Nagar residence when a rashly driven brick-laden truck coming from the opposite side on the same carriageway rammed into their vehicle.

Due to the sheer impact of the collision, the front portion of the Palio was completely destroyed and all the three occupants sustained fatal injuries. As the doors of the vehicle got jammed, they were unable to come out. Hearing their cries, a man in the vicinity rushed to their rescue. Identified as Abhishek, he informed the police and tried to extricate the victims from the mangled car. But before he could do so, the vehicle caught fire killing all the three on the spot. The police said they were charred beyond recognition.

Sumit used to live at Defence Colony and was planning to get married to his colleague, Mamta, soon.
