Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The Royal College of Physicians (RCP), London, is organising its international conference in general medicine at Leela Kovalam, near here, on March 5 and 6. The conference is aimed at initiating a dialogue between the RCP and physicians in South Asia and promoting educational activities in this region. One of the major issues to be in focus at the conference is the emerging epidemic of diabetes in developing countries, a reflection of the impact of an altered and affluent lifestyle on a genetically vulnerable population. The threat of blood-borne infections, such as Hepatitis B and C and HIV, anaemia, modern management of inflammatory bowel diseases, hypertension and diabetes, which has directly contributed to the spiralling incidence of renal diseases, and overuse of over-the-counter analgesics are some of the important and current issues that will be discussed at the conference. The conference will also aim at promoting cooperation between the RCP and its members here in medical education and healthcare. A presentation on international medical graduates in the U.K. and an educational session for postgraduate students in medicine will be arranged at the end of the conference. The conference is being co-organised by Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital here. Internationally renowned doctors and fellows of RCP, including Parveen Kumar, gastroenterologist; Roger Williams, hepatologist; Dame Carol Black, President of RCP and an authority on rheumatology; and Mary Armitage, Clinical Vice-President, RCP, and endocrinologist, will attend the conference.
