KOLKATA: The first round of the Central Excise Open tennis tournament accounted for the exit of three seeds in the men's section as unseeded players proved their mettle here on Monday. Unseeded local boy Manoj Kumar Sewa ousted the seventh-seeded Jitin Bishnoi of Haryana in straight sets. Another local boy, Farid Alam who moved into the main round as a qualifier defeated sixth-seeded Honey Rana from Delhi. Wild card entrant Partha Sarathi Bhattacharya from Delhi made short work of eighth-seeded Rishi Sharma from Uttar Pradesh by comfortably winning 6-1 6-2. Second-seeded Kamala Kannan of Tamil Nadu, fourth-seeded Gursharan Singh of Punjab and fifth-seeded Saurav Sukul of West Bengal reached the pre-quarterfinals winning their matches with ease. However, there was no major upset in the women's section. Most of the seeds enjoyed byes in the first round as there were not enough entries. The only seed playing a to play, eighth-seeded J.B. Shashirekha of Karnataka, blanked unseeded Deepti Gupta of Tamil Nadu 6-0, 6-0.
