CHENNAI: Students of Guru Shri Shantivijay Jain College hosted an intercollegiate cultural festival `Sargam' recently. It was a fun event with film director K. Balachander delivering the inaugural address. "Normally, I do not agree to attend college functions. I haven't been to one in a long time. That's maybe because I consider present day youngsters, particularly girls, to be much, much more intelligent than I am. I become nostalgic when I recall my student days, which were pleasant. I was a regular participant in the college day, hostel day and founders day variety entertainment programmes on the Annamalai University campus. I became an auditor and accountant after I finished my graduation for more than a decade at the accountant general's office. So, when I think back now, I am surprised at how I became a film celebrity and could remain active in the field and have a `creative career.' Now, I know that my extra curricular activities and their influence and experience during college helped me grow in that field. My extra curricular activities in college served as a springboard for all my successful pursuits in Tamil theatre and later on in the celluloid world." Later, K. Balachander read out 31 random thoughts, one for each day of the month. Actors Vishal and Srikanth, singer Srilekha Parthasarathy, principal of the college M.K. Malathi and secretary P. Gautam Vaid spoke.
