CHENNAI: The importance of business enterprises striking a balance between economics and morality in the highly competitive environment was underscored by speakers at an international round table on `Ethical issues in business and industry.'

The meeting was organised here on Monday by the University of Madras and Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.

Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. P. Thyagarajan, who presided over the meeting, said business and industry must not compromise on the ethics while rising to the challenges of overcoming fear of losses and need to post profits faster. The stature of any enterprise was decided by the credibility and reputation it enjoyed and how well it addressed issues pertaining to environment and ecology.

Towards equipping the prospective workforce of Madras University, he said it had been decided to offer an elective paper in ethics for those pursuing certain postgraduate and doctoral studies. This was expected to foster a movement that would improve public understanding of business and industry ethics, he said.

Inaugurating the meeting, S.S.P. Dharwesh, Vice-Chancellor of the Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, listed out the legal protection and guidelines available to ensure ethics in business. He said, "Business ethics is applied ethics, which is the study of what is right and good in a business."

It included moral issues that arise from business practices, institutions and decision-making and their relationship to human values.

Convener of the round table and head of Madras University's Department of Christianity, Felix Wilfred, and co-convener and head of the Department of Politics and Public Administration Aruna Sivakami, said six papers would be presented.

Two academics from Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany would be among those presenting the papers.
