Daya Nayak gets interim relief

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Mumbai police not to arrest suspended sub-inspector Daya Nayak till February 17.

A Bench, comprising Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, Justice G. P. Mathur and Justice R. V. Raveendran, granted the interim relief and decided to hear on February 17 his anticipatory bail application, which had been rejected by the Bombay High Court.

The High Court had granted time till Wednesday for him to surrender in a disproportionate assets case.

During `mention' time on Tuesday, the Bench extended by two more days the protection granted to him by the High Court and directed that he should not be arrested till Friday.

Bail to wife

On February 8, the High Court rejected the anticipatory bail petitions of Nayak and his alleged associate Rajendra Padte, but granted anticipatory bail to Nayak's wife, Komal Nayak.

Decade-long career

Nayak, who has killed 83 gangsters in encounters during his decade-long career, has been accused of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
