Science workshop for schoolchildren

If you are a student with a passion for science, the Centre for Science in Society (C-SiS) has something unique to offer during the summer vacation.

From `see-and- believe' laboratories to mini-workshops and a library, the centre is a treasure house for budding science talents. For the past several years, it has provided thousands of students with an opportunity to learn more about the mysteries of science.

Come April and the centre, functioning at Cochin University of Science and Technology, will begin its mid-summer Science Talent Development Programme (STDP) for schoolchildren.

"Two batches (junior and senior) will be there for UP and secondary school children. A day-to-day time schedule will be supplied to participants," says K.G. Nair, director of the centre.

The STDP is a seven-week session for children during which rare and innovative facilities to learn and understand science through observation and experiment will be displayed.

Facilities available at the centre include a science park and pavilion, `see-and-believe' laboratories in physics, chemistry, biology, and a science-based toy laboratory. Students will get an opportunity to do simple science experiments with the help of instructors at the centre.

They can also borrow science books available at the library. Education using audio and video CDs, and science films are other attractions at the centre. Seminars, quiz and a mini-project work will be part of the programme. Besides theory and practical classes, students can participate in quiz, seminar, personality development and behavioural sciences programmes.

They will have to do a project work by seeking reference from the library and other sources. Experts will review the projects submitted by the students. Prizes will be given to those who come up with outstanding works.

C-SiS will also conduct a `Learning Science Through Toys and Play Models (LSTP)' for kids aged between 5 and 10. There will also be story-telling sessions, mini-quiz and interactions with innovative teaching gadgets and toys for children.

The first batch of the STDP for State-level schools and similar institutions will begin on April 4. For students in Central schools, the Centre will conduct a second batch that will begin on May 11. Details can be had on phone: 0484-2575039.
