GULBARGA: Superintendent of Police K. Ramachandra Rao on Tuesday stressed the need for a detailed research on the increasing incidence of suicide, particularly in the productive age group, and the rising incidences of HIV and AIDS in the country. Inaugurating a workshop on HIV and AIDS organised by the Centre for Advocacy and Research and the Karnataka AIDS Prevention Society for media persons at the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry auditorium here, Dr. Ramachandra Rao quoted recent findings of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) saying every day more than 300 persons committed suicide in the country and on an average, about one person committed suicide every five minutes. The NCRB findings also pointed out that suicide among men was high. Every eight minutes one male committed suicide and in every 13 minutes one female committed suicide in the country. Incidences of suicide are high in Maharashtra followed by West Bengal and Karnataka, he said. Dr. Ramachandra Rao said cases of suicide are high in Maharashtra and Karnataka where AIDS and HIV cases are also high. There is a need for a detailed study on the phenomenon of suicide and whether it has any relation with HIV and AIDS. Among the major cities, Bangalore topped the list with the highest number of suicide cases, followed by Delhi and Chennai.
