Bidar: There are some discrepancies in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). If they are not set right, the purpose of the scheme will be defeated, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and MLA Sriram Reddy said in Bidar on Tuesday. Speaking at a rally to create awareness about the NREGS, he said the most important problem is that neither the Union nor the State Governments have projected any clear the budget outlay for the scheme. "These allocations should be made in the coming Union and State budgets," he said. Another hitch is that the term family has not been clearly defined. "We all know that family size can stretch from three to 60 members. Is it fair to provide guaranteed employment to just one person from a family of 60 people? What should the other 59 do?" he asked. He said that experts in development economics be consulted on this matter. K. Neela, general secretary of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane, demanded that the daily wages fixed be increased to Rs. 86. Kerala is paying Rs. 140 a person a day and Andhra Pradesh Rs. 80. Karnataka needs to increase the wages to ensure that the scheme gains popularity, she said. Antony Mendonca, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, provided details of the scheme. G.N. Nagaraj, vice-president of the Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha, and Moulana Sindabandagi, Vijay Kumar Sonare, M.S. Manohar and Sunil Kadde, were present.
