Kozhikode girls make their mark

Things are looking up for Mia Hamm's sisters in Kozhikode.

The women footballers from the city have begun to make their mark, slowly but surely. Four of them - Raji A. Sunny, P.V. Nisha, A. Reshma and Jeeva Kurian - will be representing Kerala in the National senior women's championship, which opened at Bhilai on February 10.

There were in fact players from Kozhikode in most of the teams fielded by the State last year too. Which is not bad for a district where the sport first got a serious look-in only four years ago.

"We are encouraged by the progress the women's game has made in Kozhikode in such a short span of time," says the Kozhikode District Football Association (KDFA) secretary A.V.M. Ashraf. "In 2004, one of our players, Baby Shalini, was also selected to the Indian camp."

He says the response to the camps conducted by the KDFA for women players has been excellent. "Later this year, we will be conducting the first ever league in women's football. To begin with, there will be four teams."

The KDFA is also planning to host an international women's tournament at the Corporation Stadium this year.
