DMK cadres stage demonstration

They urge Government to write off loans given for LPG connection

STOP DISTRAINT PROCEEDINGS: DMK cadres staging a demonstration before Central Cooperative Bank in Chinnalapatti on Tuesday.

DINDIGUL: Cadres of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration before Central Cooperative Banks and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks at various places in the district on Tuesday, urging them not to take distraint proceedings against those who had borrowed loans for getting liquefied petroleum gas connection.

Demonstrations were held in front of PACBs at Vannampatti and Chitharaveu and CCBs at Chithayankottai, Pattiveeranpatti and Chinnalapatti.

Addressing the gathering at Chinnalapatti, I. Periasamy, district secretary, said that bankers had seized household articles from borrowers in the name of distraint proceedings and intimidated gas agencies not to supply gas to defaulters. Agencies had been insisting on borrowers to produce bank receipt for cylinder supply. Action had been initiated against borrowers even without issuing notice.

He urged the Government to waive the loan given for gas connections immediately.

In 2000, the DMK Government, just before the last Assembly election, had offered loan — Rs.2,000 for single cylinder and Rs.3,000 for two cylinders — without initial deposit to poor people to get LPG connection.

The bank had paid the entire amount to gas agency and collected the loan from people in three years. About 48,000 connections including 10,000 in Athoor union were given.

The banks had started pressurising defaulters to repay amount, as such huge arrears would create financial constraints on them.

Sources in the party stated that the DMK had assured the people that the DMK led-government would repay the borrowed amount to banks on behalf of the people, if it came back to power again.
