Swamy cautions against nuclear deal
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The proposed India-U.S. nuclear agreement contains conditions for separating the civil and military facilities, which will be "disadvantageous" to the country. Hence, India should not sign it "in haste," Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy told the media here on Tuesday.
Dr. Swamy said that if India signed the agreement then it could not carry out nuclear tests. However, he supported the United Progressive Alliance Government for its decision to vote along with the U.S. against Iran for violating the non-proliferation treaty.
He criticised the UPA Government for the reported survey of Muslims done in the armed forces and described it as "anti-national."
Foreigners Act
Dr. Swamy condemned the Government's move to amend the Foreigners Act, which would shift the burden of proof of citizenship from the illegal immigrant to a government tribunal. This would open the floodgates for illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The Janata Party would form a Hindu front in Tamil Nadu to take on the AIADMK and the DMK in the coming Assembly election. It would crystallise at a meeting being organised by the VHP and other Hindu organisations in Erode on March 19.
