Bangalore: More people are becoming fitness-conscious these days. But many just do not have the time to visit a gym or health club on a regular basis. This has led to an increase in purchase of home exercise equipment, from exercycles to motorised treadmills and steppers. "Many of these equipment are useful because one can work out at home whenever one wants. But many do not use them the right way and end up injuring themselves,'' says Bijou John, trainer at a gym in Indiranagar. The stationary bicycle is among the least expensive and easiest to use. You just pedal away as fast you can. It puts less strain on the joints than running or jogging. And depending on how long and how fast you pedal, burns away calories and strengthens your cardio-vascular system, says Mr. John.
More expensive
Treadmills are more expensive and there are too many models to choose from. The mechanised ones with digital readings of your speed, pulse rate and calories burnt may cost Rs. 20,000 upwards, says Mr. John. "Make sure the running surface is strong and wide enough and if there are hand rails in front, use them at least in the beginning. Build up the incline or gradient by stages so that your leg muscles are not unduly strained,'' he adds.
Steppers
Steppers or climbers with pedals are other easy-to-use home exercise equipment. Those with pedals large enough for smooth movements are the best. Some are motorised, but with manual controls. In the case of basic models, adjustments are to be done manually, adds Mr. John.
