TUMKUR: Members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti blocked the Bangalore-Honnavar National Highway 206 at Singhri Circle at Tiptur in Tumkur district on Tuesday demanding the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for allegedly showing disrespect to B.R. Ambedkar and Indira Gandhi. The protest against Mr. Yediyurappa for "removing" a photograph of Ambedkar from his chamber in the Vidhana Soudha entered its 10th day in the district. Leaders of the DSS leaders said the Deputy Chief Minister also removed a photograph of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Activists of the DSS gathered at Kodi Circle and marched to Singhri Circle. They staged a dharna on the highway and traffic was disrupted at noon for more than an hour. M. Imkongla Jamir, Assistant Commissioner of Tiptur subdivision, met the protestors, who submitted memoranda addressed to the Governor and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly seeking the resignation of Mr. Yediyurappa. They said Ambedkar and Indira Gandhi championed the cause of the Dalits. "We cannot tolerate Mr. Yediyurappa's action,'' they said. They said a few years ago, the BJP forced B.T. Lalita Naik, then a Minister, to resign on the charge that her son had allegedly denigrated a statue of Ambedkar in Bangalore.
