A REAL STORY: Jayashri, who is HIV positive, speaking at a programme on AIDS in Gulbarga on Tuesday.
GULBARGA: Jayashri, who is HIV positive and has four children, educates sex workers on AIDS prevention. She does not mind giving her name or allowing photographs as she wants people to know about her experiences. She narrated her story at a workshop for presspersons organised by the Centre for Advocacy and Research, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Karnataka AIDS Prevention Society and the Gulbarga and Bidar units of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists here. Jayashri said she underwent the HIV test at the Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre here two years ago after her husband tested HIV positive. She is separated from her husband, who is an AIDS patient, and lives with her parents. She said none of her children is HIV positive and she wants to take care of them. MYRADA-Soukya, an NGO which has been implementing the "HIV Prevention Project" in the district in the past two years, has appointed her a counsellor for sex workers. Nagendra, an AIDS patient who is a counsellor at Divya Jivana, which is affiliated to the Karnataka Positive People's Network, said he has benefited from the antiretroviral treatment (ART). He appealed to the authorities to set up an ART clinic here.
