Two die as family attempts suicide
Special Correspondent
PANAJI:
Two persons died when five members of a family from Kerala allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison at the Miramar beach near here on Tuesday morning.
The condition of two of the survivors, both teenagers, was serious. Police are yet to find the cause for the extreme step.
Police told The Hindu that they tried to piece together some information from Amrita (12), whose screams drew people at the beach to the scene of the incident. When police arrived, they found five persons, including two males and two females, in a serious condition. They were rushed to the Goa Medical College hospital.
Ms. Bina, about 42-45 years old and Mr. Pradip, aged about 25-30 were declared dead. As Amrita was in a state of shock, she has not been informed about her mother's death.
The police spoke to Amrita, who speaks Malyalam, through an interpreter. She identified the other persons as her family members. She said Ms. Bina was her mother, while Mr. Pradip was her elder brother. The two persons fighting for their lives were her siblings, Aakash (19) and Ashwini (17). She said her father's name was Vasudevan.
