Photo: SHANKER CHAKRAVARTY NEW DELHI: Celebrating sale of over 50 lakh cars by its Indian joint venture Maruti, parent company Suzuki on Tuesday asked its Japanese dealers to learn from the Indian network that is poised to overtake the Japanese market in terms of sales. The success of the Indian network is evident from the sale of 5.16 lakh units by Maruti in 2005 through just about 300 dealers as against about 3,500 outlets in Japan that sold seven lakh vehicles. The higher dealer productivity, coupled with high sales growth rates in India, has led Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, to bring about 2,400 top Suzuki dealers in Japan on a visit to the Indian market and ask them "to catch up or be ready to be overtaken.'' Mr. Suzuki, who is addressing the Japanese dealers and asking them to "see the best practices of Maruti and Maruti dealers in India,'' lauded the company's performance in the Indian market where it had sold over 50 lakh cars since it started sales in 1983.
