Protest against attack on SAT Hospital staff

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Protest has been mounting among the hospital employees and the medical fraternity over the recent incident in which a section of the visitors to SAT Hospital and the relatives of a patient clashed with the security personnel over an alleged bid to take away some medical records.

The Hospital Employees' Union, which met on Tuesday, voiced their protest against the issue and said the security personnel had only been doing their duty when they prevented the removal of the medical records.

The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association, in a statement here, said that the police, who reached the hospital while the scuffle was on, had chosen to beat up the security staff. "This will destroy the morale of the staff and encourage vandalism and anti-social activities on the hospital premises," the statement said.

The association has demanded that strict restrictions be imposed on the visitors coming to the hospital and that the visiting hours be limited. The medical standards in Medical College can be elevated to a tertiary care centre's level only if strict restrictions are imposed on visitors, on the lines of the system in Sri Chitra Medical Centre, they said.

The Post Graduates' Association has also raised the same demand. Following the recent incident when they were attacked, security personnel are now quite lax about restraining visitors. This will lead to a situation wherein anti-social elements, posing as relatives of patients, will have a free run in the hospital, they said.
