CRACKING HIT: Andhra's Y. Venugopala Rao takes the aerial route during his century knock againstTamil Nadu. - PHOTO: H. SATISH
HYDERABAD: Tamil Nadu recorded it's fourth straight win when it defeated Andhra by 39 runs in the penultimate round of the South Zone K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy limited-overs cricket tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Uppal) here on Tuesday. India discard Dinesh Kaarthick (79, 84 balls, 10x4, 1x6) and captain S. Badrinath (92, 85 balls, 4x4, 1x6) primarily helped Tamil Nadu, put into bat, score 313 for eight in 50 overs. When Dinesh Kaarthick swung medium-pacer Saraswathi Reddy for a six and a four in one over, the trend was virtually set for the morning. Dinesh was more flamboyant with some brilliant strokes and Badrinath was technically more correct. Not surprisingly, Andhra bowling, with the exception of experienced K.S. Shahabuddin (three for 38) wilted under pressure. The fielding was shoddy. But, one effort stood out for the day when Faiz took a brilliant catch at deep extra-cover off Shahabuddin to deny Badrinath his century.
Dramatic start
It was a dramatic start when Andhra began the chase. Both openers I.S. Prasad and Y. Gyaneshwar Rao were dropped by Vidyuth Sivaramakrishnan in slip cordon off medium-pacer Vignesh in the first over of the innings. In the second over, M.R. Shrinivas had similar misfortune of having Gyaneshwar dropped. But, they did not last long. Venugopal Rao, who was slow to get off the blocks went on to complete a century (103, 103 balls, 8x4, 3x6). At Gymkhana, it was the chance of Kerala to pick a bonus point thanks to century by S. Suresh (107 not out, 119b, 9x4, 2x6) and rub salt into Hyderabad's wounds as the host suffered fourth straight defeat. In another match at ECIL, Karnataka, by scoring a 123-run win against Goa topped the table with 19 points followed by Tamil Nadu with 18 points. Kerala (5 points), Hyderabad (minus three) and Goa (minus two) were in that order. Wednesday is a rest day. The scores: At Uppal: Tamil Nadu 313 for eight in 50 overs (Dinesh Kaarthick 79, S. Badrinath 92, Vasudeva Doss 59, K.S. Shahabuddin three for 38, Kalyanakrishna three for 74) bt Andhra 274 for seven in 50 overs (Y. Venugopala Rao 103, S. Arjun Kumar 33). At Gymkhana: Hyderabad 189 for eight in 50 overs (Amol Shinde 61, Ahmed Quadri 49, Sony Cheruvathur four for 38) lost to Kerala 193 for three in 36 overs (S. Suresh 107 not out, Sony Cheruvathur 33). AT NFC: Karnataka 299 for nine in 50 overs (Stuart Binny 74, Sunil Joshi 47, B. Akhil 40, Rowland Barrington 39) bt Goa 176 for nine in 50 overs (Sunil Joshi five for 20).
