THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: SN College, Kannur upset fancied MG College, Thiruvananthapuram 2-1 to enter the quarterfinals in the football event of the 8th College Games at the Central Stadium here on Tuesday. Babu (11th), Jaison (55th) struck for SN College while Sunil was on target for MG College in the 22nd minute. The Thiruvananthapuram side had itself to blame for the defeat after being the dominant side for the major part of the contest. Sloppy defending by MG College virtually gifted victory for the visitors when it appeared that the match would be decided by a tie-breaker. Jaison could hardly believe his luck when he beat the off-side trap and hood-winked the on-rushing goalkeeper to score the match-winner in the 55th minute. After that goal, the play became a bit rough when SN College defended in numbers. MG College's Vincent was given the marching orders for hitting a rival player when two minutes remained for the match to end. It capped a frustrating day for the Thiruvananthapuram side which failed to settle the issue after missing a couple of gilt-edged chances. However, SN College too had its moments in the match.
To its credit, the Kannur side settled down early and was more convincing in its sorties in the first 15 minutes. It went ahead in the 11th minute when Babu converted a penalty.
