Film chamber's appeal to Chief Minister

CHENNAI: The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) has appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to release the subsidy amount of Rs. 6.76 crore from 2000-04 for 114 films to producers concerned along with distribution of State film awards which was announced recently.

"The Tamil film producers whose films are recommended for subsidy are eager to receive the amount at the earliest. We assure that the SIFCC, the apex body of the South Indian film industry, will support and cooperate in all good measures for the progress and development of Tamil Nadu," K.C.N. Chandrashekar, president, said in a statement. — Special Correspondent

More Sri Lankan refugees arrive

Ramanathapuram: A fresh batch of Sri Lankan refugees arrived at Arichalmunai in Dhanushkodi near here Tuesday.

Sources said 23 refugees belonging to 11 families reached the shore by two separate boats. — Staff Reporter

"Tamizhthai Award"

CHENNAI: The State Government has invited nominations for "Tamizhthai Award" from institutions that promote Tamil art and culture.

The award carries a cash of Rs. 5 lakh. The nominations should reach the Director of Tamil Development, Halls Road, Egmore, Chennai 600 008, before February 28. — Special Correspondent

Post office monthly income scheme

CHENNAI: Accounts opened in post offices under monthly income scheme from February 13 will not carry bonus at the maturity after six years. However, accounts opened before February 13 are eligible for a bonus of 10 per cent. As regards discount rates applicable to premature closure of accounts the revised rates are if the account is prematurely closed after one year of opening the account and before the expiry of three years, an amount equal to two per cent of the deposit will be deducted. If the account is closed after three years from the date of opening, the discount rate applicable is one per cent, according to regional director of the National Savings Institute here. — Special Correspondent

Air Deccan daily

flights to Port Blair

CHENNAI: Air Deccan will introduce direct daily flights from Chennai to Port Blair from March 1.

The Managing Director, Capt. G.R. Gopinath, said the Port Blair sector would be provided with a 180-seater Airbus-320 jet. The flight will leave at 5-50 a.m. and reach Port Blair at 7-50 a.m. In the return direction, it will leave Port Blair at 8-25 a.m. and arrive Chennai at 10-25 a.m. — Special Correspondent

Honorary doctorate

for Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is holding its second convocation here on February 20. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will be presented with honorary doctorate on the occasion.

According to an official release, the function is to be held at the Centenary Auditorium of the Madras University between 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. Intimation has already been sent to candidates, and those who prefer to receive the degree in person can collect admission cards by furnishing their identity proofs from February 17 onwards. — Special Correspondent

ERODE: The outpatient ward of the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital modernised at Rs. 5 lakhs was inaugurated on Monday by Erode MLA K.S. Thennarasu. Community certificates for Irulas

ERODE: As many as 13 Irulas were provided with community certificates at a function in Sathyamangalam on Monday. Residing in the Nandhipuram forest settlement area, Sathyamangalam taluk, they submitted a memorandum to Revenue officials recently, seeking community certificates. A team of officials visited the village, verified the applications and sanctioned the certificates.

Ration rice seized

ERODE: The Railway Protection Force seized 13 bags of ration rice from a train on Tuesday. According to sources, the personnel conducted intensive checks on trains crossing Erode to reach Kerala. As much as 400 kg of rice was seized from the Trichy-Ernakulam express at the station, and handed over to Revenue officials.

NAMAKKAL: Collector V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam flagged off a Population and Family Welfare awareness rally here on Tuesday.

A large number of students in the district participated in the rally, which started at Namakkal Government Hospital and concluded near the Namakkal Government Boys Higher Secondary School (South).

Autorickshaw drivers continue strike

TIRUNELVELI: A uto drivers continued their strike for the second day on Tuesday.

As some drivers were found taking more children during their `school trips,' cases were registered against them. So, they started their strike on Monday.

Their representatives met Police Commissioner K. Jayanth Murali, who assured them that a final decision would be arrived at after convening a tripartite meeting involving police, representatives of auto drivers and transport officials.

Later, the drivers met Collector Atul Anand and submitted a memorandum.

Reserve bus tickets

and seats too

TIRUNELVELI: The commuters travelling in State Express Transport Corporation buses can reserve seats of their choice when they reserve tickets.

A note said the SETC, which hitherto allotted seats serially, has decided to allocate seats according to the preference of travellers. As per the new system, the commuter, while reserving his ticket 10 days prior to the date of journey, can reserve the seat of his choice without paying any extra amount.

The facility will be available at Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.

Two luxury coaches have been added to the fleet of SETC to be operated between Tirunelveli and Bangalore and in the return direction. The departure time of these buses will be 6 p.m. on both directions.

Demonstration

TIRUNELVELI: Cadres of Paattaali Thamizhar Arasiyal Munnani staged a demonstration at the junction here on Monday.

Led by its organiser A. Viyanarasu, they said the Union Government should give the entire flood relief of Rs. 13,685 crore, demanded by the Tamil Nadu Government as the assistance of Rs. 1,000 crore released by the Centre was not enough to compensate the enormous loss suffered by the farmers of Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, the Central Government should initiate steps to waive all loans availed by farmers.

The Union Government should prevent the Andhra Pradesh Government from constructing a dam across the Palar, which was providing succour to the people of Chengalpet and Chennai districts, they said.

Training

programme

Tuticorin: A five-day training programme on `fisheries,' organised by the Fisheries College and Research Institute for rural women, commenced here on Monday.

R. Santhanam, Dean, FCRI, said it would help women learn nuances of composite fish culture, ornamental fish culture and manufacture of value-added fish products.

"Our aim is to augment the income generation capacity of women and enhance their socio-economic status. In all, 30 women were attending the programme.

Professors attached to the Department of Fisheries Extension at FCRI coordinated the training.

MADURAI: One additional sleeper class coach is being attached to 6703/6704 Chennai Egmore-Tuticorin-Chennai Egmore Pearl City Express with immediate effect, according to a Southern Railway press release.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.37 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 845 cusecs, and the outflow 1,000 cusecs.
