Krishnankutty died of natural causes, says wife

Staff Reporter

  • Allegations that his death was caused by a secret surgery to donate one of his kidneys refuted
  • Reaction to the issue raised in Assembly
  • Company has given compensation to wife of the deceased

Thiruvananthapuram: Krishnankutty, a resident of Pathanamthitta, died of natural reasons while working as a driver in Singapore this year, according to his wife, K. Saraswathy. She refuted allegations that his death was caused by a secret surgery to donate one of his kidneys.

At a press conference here, Ms. Saraswathy said Krishnankutty's employer had offered to take her and the couple's children to Singapore for her husband's funeral.

However, she had declined the offer because her asthmatic condition prevented her from undertaking such a long journey.

She had also agreed to her husband's body being cremated in Singapore. She also said the company had given her compensation. The money had been deposited in a nationalised bank in her name.

Ms. Saraswathy said some of her relatives who were interested in getting a share of the compensation money were spreading rumours about her husband's death.

The Opposition had raised the matter of Krishnankutty's death in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Krishnankutty had recently travelled to Singapore from Mumbai after he got employment as a driver in a private firm.

His death became a controversy after some persons informed the Mumbai police that Krishnankutty had gone to Singapore to donate his kidney in an illegal manner and he had died while undergoing a surgery to remove the organ.

The Mumbai police, in turn, informed the State police and also various airports in Kerala. The Mumbai police said Krishnankutty's body should be subjected to post-mortem if it was brought to Kerala.

The Opposition had raised the matter in the Assembly and said a Minister had played a key role in the alleged cover-up of Krishnankutty's death.
