Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: The Dharwad police have arrested five persons, including the president of the Kurdikere Gram Panchayat and two women, in a case pertaining to the death of a farmers' leader.

The police gave the name of the arrested as Shivappa Dyavappa Mullappanavar (29), president of Kurdikere Gram Panchayat; Ningappa Mudukappa Shidlingannavar (28); Jagadish Parasappa Gavali (22); Dyamavva Handi; and Mallavva Kubihala, all residents of Karadikoppa village in Kalghatgi taluk.

The victim, Sidramappa Basappa Begur, who was the president of the Dharwad District Pumpset Users' Association and a member of the Kurdikere Gram Panchayat, had unearthed cases of misappropriation in the gram panchayat and the milk collection centre at Kurdikere and had complained about the same to the Deputy Commissioner, the police said.

Enraged by his action, the accused had threatened Begur, it is said. When he refused to take back his complaint, the accused waylaid him on the night of February 3 and strangled him to death, the police said.
