Chief Minister to hold review meeting

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will review the functioning of the Urban, Housing and Forest departments on Wednesday.

A high-level meeting called by the Chief Minister at the Vidhana Soudha with captains of industry scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed. Last Saturday, Mr. Kumaraswamy said he would hold a meeting with industrialists to seek their advice on tackling problems related to industry and infrastructure in Bangalore.

The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry and other associations of business and industry have not received any invitation from the Government for the meeting on Wednesday, sources said. — Special Correspondent

Three from State

in NDC panel

BANGALORE: The National Development Council (NDC) has nominated three experts on agriculture from the State to the Working Group headed by Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik set up to identify and assess the factors that have contributing to the decline in agricultural productivity in the country in recent years.

They are S. Bisaliah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore; B.R. Hegde, retired Director of Research, UAS, Bangalore; and R.S. Deshpande, Professor and Head, Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Unit, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore.

The Working Group has been asked to submit its final report by September this year, sources said. — Special Correspondent

Kumaraswamy

to be felicitated

BANGALORE: The National Education Society of Karnataka will felicitate Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is an alumnus of its college in Basavanagudi here, at a function on Thursday. It will be held at Dr. H.N. Kalakshetra, National College, Jayanagar. — Staff Reporter

Togadia against higher quota for minorities

Belgaum: Praveen Togadia, national General Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), has opposed any increase in reservation for minorities. He has also taken a dig at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government for appointing the Justice Rajendra Sachar Committee to determine the socio-economic status of Muslims. The committee has also sought information from the Defence services.

He was speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday after appearing before a city court in view of a non-bailable warrant issued against him in connection with a 2003 case. He expressed apprehensions on the intentions of the committee and wondered it was appointed with a view to provide reservation criteria in the Defence services. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Fifty delegates from across the State took part in the State-level faculty development programme organised by the KLE Society's College of Business Administration here on Monday. Inaugurating the programme, Madan Desai, former president of the Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, called upon teachers to encourage students to become entrepreneurs. N. Census of houses

MADIKERI: A census of houses in Kodagu will be taken up from Aril 20 to May 10, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav has said.

The survey of houses will help determine the economic and social conditions of the people, Mr. Yadav said in an official press release here on Tuesday.

Schoolteachers, village accountants and gram panchayat secretaries will be involved in the census. Headmasters of high schools and revenue inspectors will be asked to work as supervisors. — Staff Correspondent

Eye check-up camp

BHADRAVATI: A free eye check-up and surgery camp will be held here from Thursday to Sunday. It is being organised by Mysore Paper Mills Ltd., the District Blindness Eradication Committee, the District Health and Family Welfare Department, the Government General Hospital and the local Lion's Club.

A team of eye surgeons led by Sampath Soolanki of Bangalore will participate in the camp to be held at the General Hospital in Old Town.

Two suspended

RAICHUR: Amlam Aditya Biswas, Chief Executive Officer of Raichur Zilla Panchayat, has suspended from service Joseph Kadimani and Ziauddin, Second Division Assistants at the zilla panchayat engineering division here, in connection with the reported malpractices found in implementing a drinking water project in Lingsugur taluk taken up under the MP's Local Area Development Fund. — Staff Correspondent

Toddy seized

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Giriyeppa and Taranagouda from Yergunta village, Thimmappa from Vadvatti village and Chandpasha from Bijjangera village near here and Narasamma and Tayamma from the city and seized about 1.5 kg of chloralhydrate and 100 litres of spurious toddy from them while they were selling it on Monday. All of them have been remanded in judicial custody. Cases have been registered at the Yapaldinni police station, the Yergera police station and the Market Yard police station.

Money recovered

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Venkatesh from Sindhanur town and Tayappa from Pagadadinni Camp in Sindhanur taluk on gambling charge and recovered Rs. 3,000 stake money from them on Monday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. Cases have been registered at the Sindhanur Town and the Sindhanur Rural police stations. — Staff Correspondent

Yediyurappa coming

SHIMOGA: A grand welcome awaits Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa when he visits his home district on Wednesday for the first time after assuming office. Mr. Yediyurappa, who will arrive by the Bangalore-Shimoga train, will address a press conference at the Circuit House before addressing a BJP workers' meeting at the Gayatri Mangalya Mandir.

Traffic survey

MYSORE: The Public Works Department will conduct a sample survey of road traffic from February 22 to 24 at the established "count posts" on National Highways, State Highways, major district roads in Mysore, Mandya and Chamarjaanagar districts. The sample survey will be taken between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Superintending Engineer, PWD, R. Sreenivasa, has appealed to all motorists to slow down their vehicles near the "count posts" and help in the successful completion of survey. - Special Correspondent

Speech, hearing camp

MYSORE: The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, in association with the Rotary Mysore Midtown, will conduct a speech and hearing screening camp on Friday. The camp will be held at Kaliyuva Mane, Divya Deepa Charitable Trust, Kenchalagudu, near Salhundi, Manandavadi Road. Persons with hearing disorders, ear pain and loss of hearing, speech defects including stammering, problems in voice, cleft lip, voice box problems, delayed speech, mental retardation, learning disability and autism can attend the camp.
