CPI slams State for scrapping milk societies

`Politically-motivated, as management of units is controlled by TDP'

HYDERABAD: State Secretary of Communist Party of India K. Narayana has slammed the Government for `arbitrarily' scrapping 5,000 milk cooperative societies and bringing activity to a halt in eight milk-processing factories.

At a press conference on Tuesday, he denounced the `high-handedness' in scrapping the societies by simply issuing an ordinance that changed the daily life of thousands of people.

Demanding that status quo be maintained on the issue, Mr. Narayana wondered why the Government had not discussed it in the Assembly or called an all-party meeting to thrash out the problem. It was clear, he alleged, that it was a politically-motivated move, as the management of eight processing units was controlled by the Telugu Desam Party.

Budget session

On the party's focus during the Assembly's budget session, he said it would bring to the fore the Government's "utter lack of priority" in taking up irrigation projects. "We have been asking for priority to be accorded to projects in backward areas, like Dummugudem and Devadula, in Telangana, and the Handri Neeva Srujala Sravanthi, in Rayalaseema, but nothing was happening. Obviously the Government's priorities are lopsided," he said, adding such policies were whipping passions among the people and leading to regional imbalances.

Agitation

On February 22, the party would launch an agitation in the State, along with other parts of the country, against hike in prices of essential commodies. On March 3, it would protest against American imperialism and the "big-brotherly attitude of the US on several issues globally" when President George Bush visits the city. Between March 1 and 15, party leaders and cadre would go to the mandal level and identify issues to be brought to the fore.
