YSR launches survey on manuscripts

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday formally launched a State-wide survey seeking information on manuscripts. He released a poster in his chambers at the Assembly complex.

Dr. Reddy conveyed his happiness over the five-day survey that will commence on February 20 and stressed the need to preserve the rich history and civilisation for future generations, according to an official release. - Staff Reporter

Workers injured as

landmines go off

KHAMMAM : Two landmines planted reportedly by the CPI (Maoist) near Gundlavagu bridge in Venkatapuram mandal went off accidentally leaving a group of workers injured on Tuesday.

According to reports, a mason, S.K.Yousuf, on his way to his work site along with a group of workers, spotted a set of electric wires on the roadside. He pulled them out of curiosity thus triggering explosion of the landmines. Yousuf and a tribal youth Koppam Tualasiram sustained severe injuries. - Staff Reporter

Four youths held;

porno CDs seized

KADAPA : The Proddatur police raided an ST hostel on the Pottipadu road and arrested four youths while they were screening pornographic films with the help of the hostel watchman on Monday night.

The police seized 35 porno CDs, 95 pirated CDs, a CD player and a television set from the arrested persons, Proddatur DSP S.M. Basha told newsmen at Proddatur on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

`Srujana' from March 9

Nellore : `Srujana - 2006', a State-level competition and exhibition of engineering working models will be organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishad at the College of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad, from March 9 to March 12.

The main focus is to bring together the cream of budding engineers and promote professional competence. Only the winners of the first round from each branch will be eligible for second round competition which will be held at `Srujana - 2006', Hyderabad.

KHAMMAM : A poclain and a tractor were set afire by members of the left wing extremist group near Bhimaram village of Asawapuram mandal late on Monday night, according to the police.

Nellore : The Kavlai police arrested three persons for allegedly attempting to circulate fake currency notes on Tuesday.

KADAPA: An Airtel showroom near Kadapa municipal grounds was burgled and cellular phones, SIM cards and recharge cards all worth about Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 15,000 in cash stolen in the early hours of Tuesday.

Showroom owner G. Venugopal detected the burglary in the morning on finding the counter broken open and material strewn all over. Burglars gained entry by making a hole in the rear wall of the showroom, according to Chinna Chowk Circle Inspector Nagaraju, who inspected the shop. - Staff Reporter

VIZIANAGARAM: The unidentified body of a 25-year-old woman was found near Akkivaram Pedda Cheruvu area in Denkada mandal by Sub-Inspector J. Venkata Rao on Monday afternoon. The woman about 5 feet tall was wearing a green saree with white-spotted print on it and red blouse. The body was kept in mortuary at the district headquarters hospital for identification. Jailed for assault

ELURU: Additional Assistant Sessions Judge V.R.K. Krupasagar on Tuesday sentenced one Bhimaiah of Vijayawada to under go five years' imprisonment for assaulting a head constable on duty.

According to the prosecution, when the Head Constable Kottu Srinivas who was on night patrolling tried to prevent Bhimaiah from committing a burglary in the one town in 2005, he was knifed by the convict.

Man ends life in

front of police station

KHAMMAM: Dodda Appa Rao, 32, committed suicide by consuming poison in front of Chintakani village police station on Tuesday. He was married a few months ago to a girl with whom he was reportedly in love. The marriage was opposed by his first wife, who even challenged it in court.

The village elders supported his first wife and wanted him to hand over his properties to her. Protesting against their decision, he consumed poison and committed suicide near the police station. — Staff Reporter
