KURNOOL : The District Crisis Management Group, headed by District Collector Vikas Raj, met here on Tuesday and urged the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to appoint an expert agency for preparing off-site emergency plan for Kurnool district. Four factories were identified as Major Accident Hazard (MAH) `A' category in the district. Except one, three factories were yet to prepare the off-site crisis management plan.

Mr. Vikas Raj asked representatives of the two factories (since Rayalaseema paper mill is not functioning) to submit their action plan. The meeting decided to specify roles for each department in case of emergency.

Fire station sought

Chairman of TGV group T.G. Venkatesh, who attended the meeting on behalf of Sri Rayalaseema Alkalies and Sri Rayalaseema Hi-strength Hypo, sought for an exclusive fire station in Gondiparla which was the only industrialised area in the district. The management offered support for setting up infrastructure for the fire station. Representatives of the two factories said one of the units had capacity to produce 210 tonnes of caustic soda. Chlorine gas handled by the factory was considered the toxic gas and the unit had mechanism to neutralise the gas in case of emergency.

Fire engines

Territory Manager of LPG filling station of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Mahender Reddy said the factory had three bullets to stock 370 tons of LPG. The factory had five fire engines to meet the emergency. The group reviewed the traffic management since the factory was located close to the highway.

SP B. Malla Reddy, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories Srihari and others were present.
