NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday assured the Supreme Court that financial constraints would not come in the way of construction of a modern slaughter house at Ghazipur in East Delhi so that it was completed before the June 30 deadline fixed by the Court. A three-Judge Bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhan, Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice A.K. Mathur last week had pulled up the MCD for not speeding up the construction despite an assurance given to the Court. Not satisfied with the progress, the Court told the MCD that it would monitor the construction work. On Tuesday the MCD assured the Bench that it would sanction the funds, which would be available immediately. Further the Bench was informed that a cheque for Rs.19.78 crores was ready and would be given to the contractor after he gave an irrevocable bank guarantee. It was submitted that the contractor had refused to give the requisite bank guarantee and this had delayed the progress of the work. Taking note of the submissions, the Bench directed the MCD to file a fresh affidavit giving details of funds being released to the contractor who was to import the machinery. It also asked the MCD to place fresh orders so that the capacity of the new slaughter house could be enhanced.
