Bhubaneswar: The proceedings in the Orissa Assembly were disrupted on Monday for a strange reason a bagful of coins. Opposition Congress members surprised Speaker Maheswar Mohanty and treasury bench members when they produced several bags of coins on the table. They said the coins amounted to Rs. 60, 000 which they were paying towards the fine imposed on three party members for having damaged microphones in the House during the monsoon session. Congress members Nimai Sarkar, Rabindra Mallick and Debasish Patnaik had been fined Rs. 20,000 each. As the bag of coins was placed by the members, the Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes and extended it by 30 minutes. The proceedings were adjourned for the lunch recess. The members said they had raised it through donations from the people to pay the fine. When the House reassembled, the Speaker described the action as "against the established tradition.'' ``If they were sincere about what they are doing they should have deposited the coins with the Assembly cashier,'' he said.
