RSS backs Centre on vote against Iran

Special Correspondent

`Not in our interest to have more nuclear powers in our vicinity'

  • Flays Government for "communalising" the armed forces
  • Demand deportation of foreign nationals from Assam

NEW DELHI: At least on one issue, the views of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are not very different from those of the Manmohan Singh Government. While it has no problem with India's vote on the Iran nuclear issue, it would prefer if an impression were not created that we were voting in a certain manner as a result of pressure from the U.S..

"It is not in our interest to have more nuclear powers in our vicinity," RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said. "Merely supporting the line taken by America may not be wrong. What we want to know is whether India raised its concern that nuclear technology was supplied to Iran by Pakistan. This should have been brought into the discussion," he said, making it clear that the RSS did find fault with the way India voted.

While the Iran issue was not likely to be discussed at the coming Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha of the RSS, the announcement on amending the Foreigner's Act and the "survey" of Muslims in the armed forces would be discussed.
