CHANDIGARH: Haryana on Tuesday sought 100 per cent compensation from the Central Government for the loss which it would suffer due to the proposed reduction in Central sales tax from four per cent to two per cent during 2006-07. The Haryana Chief Secretary, Meenaxi Anand Chaudhry, held a meeting with Sayeeda Hameed, Member of the Planning Commission, in New Delhi following the finalisation of the Annual Plan of the State by the Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia. She said that Haryana would lose up to Rs. 920 crores on account of proposed reduction in Central Sales Tax during 2006-07. Giving examples of how Haryana was being penalised for its good performance, Mrs. Chaudhry argued for an expeditious extension of Metro to Gurgaon, early approval of an action plan of Rs. 2,447 crores for doubling of agricultural production and inclusion of Mewat and Jhajjar under Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojna. She also pleaded for Central grants instead of loan for improving infrastructure and policing in NCR and construction of dams in upper reaches of Yamuna to augment water availability.
