G.N. Chakravarthy
MYSORE: Two seminal works by scholar G.N. Chakravarthy will be released in the city on Wednesday. While the first is a Sanskrit-Kannada lexicon, the other is the "Philosophy of History in the Mahabharata". Prof. Chakravarthy was born in 1912 at Hedthale village in Nanjangud taluk of Mysore district. He received his basic education at Sawday, Dalvoy's and Banumaiah's high schools and later studied at the Yuvaraja's College (earlier known as the Intermediate College), before pursuing his B.A. and M.A. at the Maharaja's College in the city.
Researcher of Rig Veda
Recognised as one among the most distinguished Sanskrit scholars, Prof. Chakravarthy is known for his research into Rig Veda. His new work "Philosophy of History in the Mahabharata" is reckoned to be unique as it questions the assumptions made by Western scholars on the Indian approach to history. The author refutes the Western position that Indians lacked a sense of history. A winner of many awards, Prof. Chakravarthy, who retired from the St. Philomena's College as the Head of the Department of Sanskrit, was also bestowed with the Mysore University Golden Jubilee Award in 1967 and the Veda Ratna Puraskar national award by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 2001.
