Call to develop human resources in rural areas

MYSORE: Principal Secretary, Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, V.P. Baligar, on Tuesday said that there is a need to develop human resources potential in rural areas.

Mr. Baligar was speaking here after launching "Youth for Development", a programme by the Vivekananda Institute of Leadership Development. He said that more funds are now being allocated for rural development works. Rural development is not only about construction of buildings, but of capacity development of rural people, he added. He said that one lakh Stree Shakti groups have been formed in the rural areas of Karnataka, and that they should be utilised in human resources development.

The elected representatives of Panchayat Raj bodies, especially the newly-elected, will go a long way in initiating human resources development programmes in rural areas, Mr. Baligar said.

On the occasion, Vice-Chancellor of University of Mysore, J. Shashidhar Prasad, said that if the VILD starts a course in Panchayat Raj, Mysore University will recognise it and issue certificate. Chairman of Supraja Foundation, Jagadish Trivedi; former Chairman of Mysore Agenda Task Force, R. Guru; Suttur Math Pontiff, Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji; and Swami Sureshanandaji of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama were also present.
