Commissioner, Mayor argue during inspection

Special Correspondent

Health officer says water is contaminated

MYSORE: The long-standing feud between Mayor Bharathi and Mysore City Corporation Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim came to the fore on Tuesday when they got into a heated argument over contradictory statements being issued on contamination of drinking water.

The incident took place when the Mayor visited Ward Number 17 in Ashokapuram for an inspection following outbreak of typhoid. Taluk Health Officer Prasad who was present at the spot, objected when MCC officials denied any contamination of water. Dr. Prasad pointed out that water samples taken from the Silk Factory area proved it was contaminated and had resulted in outbreak of typhoid.

However, Mr. Ibrahim refuted the Taluk Health Officer's statement. The Mayor hit out at the Commissioner for claiming that water was not contaminated. But Mr. Ibrahim persisted and said that as Commissioner of the MCC, he too was assisted by a team of qualified health officers who had briefed him that there was no water contamination.

War of words continues

While the war of words continued, the local area councillor Prabhu Murthy took exception at not being invited for the ward inspection. This led to another spat. While the Mayor held the Commissioner responsible for the lack of communication, the latter said it was the duty of the Mayor's PA to inform the local councillors.

The difference of opinion between the two continued to manifest during the entire ward inspection. When the Mayor criticised the Commissioner for extending relief under different schemes, Mr. Ibrahim shot back: "There are enough pending applicants and we will include these people as beneficiaries, but why do you raise your voice at every step?" When councillor Nagabhushan took exception to the Commissioner's attitude towards the Mayor, Mr. Ibrahim left while Ms. Bharathi continued with her inspection.
