Concern over erratic power supply, poor condition of roads Protests over erratic power supply and poor condition of roads

AGGRIEVED LOT: Residents of Kesare staged a protest against irregular power supply in Mysore on Tuesday.

MYSORE: A series of protests was staged in the city against lack of basic civic amenities.

While a section of the public staged a demonstration demanding regularisation of power supply to their locality, another protest was staged for road repair works. A third protest was held against the Forest Department for its failure to curb the erosion of green cover.

Residents of Kesare in the city staged a demonstration here on Tuesday in protest against the irregular power supply and demanded regularisation of their connections. They assembled in front of the office of the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CHESCORP) and raised slogans against the authorities. The residents were led by local area councillor Noorullah, who flayed CHESCORP officials for their apathy to redress their grievances. The councillor said that more than 120 houses in the locality did not have power for the last two years.

When the residents began drawing power, authorities disconnected them with an assurance that all connections will be legalised. But nothing has been done so far, Mr. Noorullah said.

In another protest staged by members of the Vasavi Vidyaniketana, Suryodaya Yuvaka Sangha and Aniketana Youth Club, the local bodies came under criticism for poor condition of roads in Kuvempunagar and surrounding areas. The activists pointed out that schoolchildren were among the worst-affected. Many accidents occurred in the recent past due to poor road conditions, they said.

`Many trees axed'

Meanwhile, members of the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) on Monday evening took the Forest Department officials to task for their failure to curb the erosion of green cover in the city. Conservator of Forests G.H. Srikantaiah promised them that chargesheet will be filed against agencies and Government departments felling trees without permission of the Forest Department.

He said the Forest Department will take up a survey to ascertain the number of trees felled. The ACICM said more than 2,000 trees were axed in the city during the last few months by the Mysore Police, Mysore City Corporation and CHESCORP.
