Koikude-Panja school to celebrate golden jubilee today

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School at Koikude-Panja in Mangalore taluk is set to celebrate its golden jubilee on Wednesday.

It was established on July 22, 1954 under the leadership of Shambu Malli of Panja Guthu when K.K. Hegde was president of the Dakshina Kannada District Board.

President of the Golden Jubilee Committee Prakash T. Shetty told presspersons here on Monday that Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swamiji of Kaniyoor Math in Udupi will inaugurate the celebrations and deliver benedictions.

K. Abhayachandra Jain, Mulki-Moodbidri MLA, will preside over the function. Manorama Madhwaraj, Udupi MP, will release a souvenir.

Tracing the growth of the school, Mr. Prakash said the honour of serving as the first head teacher went to T.K. Jaya Shetty.

Referring to the facilities provided at the school, he said that it is under the State Government's Akshara Dasoha Scheme.

All students receive textbooks and uniforms under the Vidyavikasa Yojana and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Students up to seventh standard are exempted from paying fees.

Despite various facilities at the school, the number of students is gradually on the decline.

Though the school saw an enrolment of 300 students in the initial days, the number has come down to 120. Limited population, migration of people fearing floods, and lack of basic amenities in the area have affected enrolment.
