Administrative breakdown in Chennai Corporation, says Stalin

Criticises issuing of property tax demand notices to residents

CHENNAI: The former Mayor and DMK deputy general secretary, M.K. Stalin, has criticised the Chennai Corporation for issuing tax demand notices to a section of residents demanding property tax arrears.

In a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Stalin said the civic agency's move only pointed to an administrative breakdown. "They must have ensured proper taxation right at the beginning instead of demanding arrears all of a sudden."

`Disgrace'

Mr. Stalin said it was a disgrace that the civic agency was functioning without an elected representative at the helm.

The Mayor's post had not been filled and the Deputy Mayor had been missing for more than four months now.

Emergency meeting

The North Chennai and South Chennai district units of the DMK called for an emergency meeting of their executives on Wednesday to discuss property tax hike.

They plan to hold a demonstration on Friday on the issue.
