CHENNAI: Led by British Deputy High Commissioner in south India Mike Connor, speakers at a function here on Monday hailed the contribution of a distinguished member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers V. Radhakrishnan to the growth of manufacturing engineering. Conferring the `IEE achievement award-2005' on Prof. Radhakrishnan, at present Director-Research at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam, Mr. Connor said the work of professionals such as the recipient was opening vistas of joint research and knowledge transfer between the institutions of the two countries. An increasing number of British universities and research institutions, he said, were coming to India to explore the possibility of working with the Indian institutions. He described the bio-data of Prof. Radhakrishnan as "just amazing." Two aspects that catch the eye were his ability to translate research into real products, evident from the patents he held, and his influential role in several professional bodies. Felicitating the award winner, C.R. Swaminathan, chief executive of PSG Institutions, said Prof. Radhakrishnan was instrumental in the introduction of computer integrated training in manufacturing research. The past international membership advisor of IEE, Chennai branch, V. Krishnaswamy, commended the institution for conferring the award on Prof. Radhakrishnan. According to the citation, Prof. Radhakrishnan, who was with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, for a long period, pioneered research of great significance in manufacturing processes and surface metrology. He won the top national award for inventions and is also the recipient of the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt research award. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Radhakrishnan said achievements were possible only through collective efforts. "This award is the result of the dedicated efforts and assistance given to me by my students and supporting staff. I salute them ... " Others who highlighted the work of the recipient were the chairman of IEE, Chennai branch, D.A. Rajan, vice-chairman Hari Eswaran, and Kartar Singh, deputy director south India of British Council, which hosted the function.
