Party will take severe action against Ramamurthy: Vasan

Special Correspondent

"His meeting with Jayalalithaa is against Congress interest"

  • Ramamurthy opposed Congress alliance with DMK
  • His motives are clearly against the interest of the party
  • TNCC has written to the party high command

CHENNAI: "The Congress party will take severe action against former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Tindivanam K. Ramamurthy for meeting All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, as it is against the interest of the party," said G.K. Vasan, TNCC president and Union Minister of State for Project Implementation, here on Monday.

[Though Mr. Vasan did not specify what type of action the party high command would take against Mr. Ramamurthy, the possibility of his expulsion from the party seemed imminent.]

Mr. Vasan told reporters that the TNCC had written to the high command about Mr. Ramamurthy's meeting with Jayalalithaa on Monday. Mr. Ramamurthy was carrying on a campaign against the TNCC president and the state unit of the party for the last three months. He had opposed the party's alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and urged it to quit the Democratic Progressive Alliance if the Congress was not given a share in power in the event of the alliance winning the elections. This was against the stand of the high command.

Mr. Ramamurthy's motives were clearly against the interests of the party, which would only help the ruling party. The high command had already issued show cause notice to him for his "outbursts" against the state leadership, said Mr. Vasan.

He described the Chief Minister's "gesture" of giving assistance to Leelavathi, daughter of slain CPI (M) councillor of the Madurai Corporation, as an attempt to gain political advantage.

He criticised the Government for not adopting a clear policy on common entrance test for admissions to professional colleges. Indecision on the part of the Government would affect the future of the students.
