HYDERABAD: The Government has advanced the execution of the Krishna Drinking Water Scheme Phase II to June this year with an outlay of Rs.1,081 crores to ensure an additional 90 million gallons per day to the twin cities. This was stated by Governor Rameshwar Thakur in his address to the Assembly on the opening day of the Budget session on Tuesday. He said that to cater to future requirements of the twin cities, a perspective plan was prepared for tapping 13.10 tmc from the Godavari and a detailed investigation initiated under the Yellampally project (Godavari-Pranahita link scheme).
Flyovers
In order to tackle the ever-growing traffic and the consequential pollution in the urban agglomeration of Hyderabad, the Governor stated that the Government had initiated steps for multiple lane Outer Ring Road of some 160 km along with satellite townships. He also mentioned about the MMTS-II and the proposed MRTS, apart from construction of four flyovers. Mr. Thakur said that top priority was being given to provide protected drinking water to all major urban areas. The Government aimed at increasing the supply to 1,750 MLD by 2009 from the current 1,235 MLD, thereby achieving an average per capita supply of 100 litres, against 80 litres, of WHO standards. Referring to measures taken for developing of industries and infrastructure, he said that the Government was setting up a coastal corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, besides promoting Special Economic Zones also at Visakhapatnam and Kakinada. The ONGC, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services, the Government and Kakinada Seaports Limited were promoting the SEZ at Kakinada in an extent of 9,000 acres. The ONGC was also setting up a 7.5 million ton refinery in Kakinada SEZ with an outlay of Rs.7,500 crores.
